Are you overwhelmed by all the different Candida treatment programs?

Treating a Candida yeast overgrowth is as controversial as the disease itself. Every expert has a different opinion about what is the most effective treatment. Most people agree that it is absolutely necessary to starve yeast with a special diet that eliminates carbohydrate, sugar and starchy foods and killing the yeast with anti-fungals. They promote the notion that all you need to do to heal the gut, is to recolonize it with good bacteria. They have ridiculous guidelines to maintain an anti-Candida lifestyle. All of this is rubbish!

For every expert who advocates a candida diet, there is an equal number who believe that it’s okay to eat whatever you want. Some use prescription-strength anti-fungal medications such as Nizoral and Fluconazole to get yeast out of the body, while others rely on natural anti-fungal herbal combinations and rotation. All of this leaves the sufferer confused, overwhelmed and groping in the dark.

"Get rid of Candida overgrowth for good!" Not so easy as many people think. There are numerous home remedies, doctor prescribed medications, over-the-counter products, foods and diets that have become the popular "go to" resources for fighting the battle with this fungus. Most of them do not follow common sense, are outdated, fads, incomplete or promote remedies that are ineffective and even harmful. I know, because in the past 35 years, I have tried all of them. I know what does not work and I know what works, but I also know why.

Prescription anti-fungal drugs and natural herbal remedies are not effective longterm, can cause side effects and they do nothing to correct the underlying dietary and lifestyle conditions that predisposed to and encourage yeast overgrowth. In fact, Monistat, Nystatin, Dyflucan and Fluconazole performed less well than natural supplements for sustaining long-term improvement. They also provide no protection against recurrence.

Because post-medication recurrence is common, most Candida experts suggest that anti-fungal medications and supplements be taken together to multiply their efforts, and for the duration of the sufferers life as a longer-term strategy, which also includes eliminating certain foods and following a rotation or maintenance plan to keep Candida from getting out of control again. But, in time it does.

Candida defies destruction. It laughs at medications, anti fungal herbs and antibiotics, because it can mutate into 11 different morphages and spontaneously switch from one to another to protect itself and keep thriving. Anti-Fungals are thought to break open the cells of the fungus, but Candida is so adaptable that it mutates and those substances never work again. These include Caprylic Acid, Undecylenic Acid, Berberine, Garlic (Allicin), Oil of Oregano, Olive Leaf Extract, Pau D-Arco and Grape Seed Extract. Candida laughs at these.

The cellular membrane of Candida is made up of polysaccharides that form the Chitin layer. This layer is no different then the composition of plant cell walls. Taking anti-fungal medications like Fluconazole (Diflucan) puts a great deal of stress on the kidneys and liver, and risk liver damage. Taking antibiotics, anti-fungal herbs or anything to “kill” Candida causes it to then create a biofilm layer that employs protein to make an exoskeleton to protect it like a suit of armor. This also makes it unrecognizable by your immune system. It dives deep into your muscle tissue, where nothing can reach it and can stay dormant for years.

Candida are anaerobes, oxidase-negative, which means they don’t use oxygen to produce energy. In fact, O2 kills them. They can live very comfortably in your deep muscle tissue, where capillaries end and blood flow and oxygen is so low that nothing can reach it. It wants you to be barely breathing, so it grows in your lungs and causes symptoms of asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia and emphysema. When you end your Candida treatment and return to a more normal diet, or have a stressful week that causes your immune system to weaken further, the Candida reveals itself with an explosion of symptoms all over the body. You thought you got rid of it, but the frightening reality is that it was hiding in stealth mode all along.

The Candida Diet

The theory is to deprive the Candida of food. With that said, no amount of intervention will be of any benefit if you consume a high sugar, high carbohydrate diet. However, you can’t starve Candida! If you stop eating entirely for days or weeks, it will turn the glycogen in your muscles back into glucose to feed itself and literally eat you instead. When you die, Candida will still be alive in your body to eat your remains as part of the decomposition process after death. This is why Candida Diets and treatments don’t work. When you eliminate foods from your diet, you eliminate the nutrition those foods provide and your immune system suffers even more. The Candida Diet is an unrealistic lifestyle that requires unimaginable will-power that can’t be maintained. Candida will flare up when it gets it’s favorite foods.

Undecenoic Undecenoic acid is made by cracking castor oil beans under pressure. It is a naturally occurring fatty acid with anti-fungal properties. Undecenoic acid occurs in small amounts, naturally in body sweat, so it is not a foreign substance to the human system.

With 30x more activity than caprylic acid, which is made from coconut oil, milk, palm oil - undecenoic acid decreases the enzymatic activity of candida cells, which allow candida to develop into an invasive pathogenic fungus. The two enzymes most affected are the protein degrading enzymes and the fat degrading enzymes - both of which increase the virulence of candida.

Undecenoic acid is highly irritating to mucous membranes, so zinc salts of this acid have been formulated in a time released delivery system to help make it more tolerable to the delicate internal skin. The side effects of undecenoic acid are nausea, vomiting and a burning sensation in the stomach. Undecenoic acid only works to kill candida in the upper GI tract, because it requires an acidic environment to activate it. When it arrives in the intestines where conditions are alkaline, it becomes inactivated. The lower GI tract is candida’s stronghold, so anything that can’t impact candida populations in the intestines is worthless. To overcome this issue, anti-candida products that contain time-released undecenoic acid have included betain HCL, which provides acidic conditions and ensures that active undecenoic acid reaches the intestines and is effective there. This causes a problem because acid kills beneficial bacteria.

So, undecenoic acid further irritates the mucous membranes of a leaky gut that are already severely damaged and kills the beneficial bacteria
• you need to convert what you eat into something your blood stream can absorb
• that make much needed nutrients, like B vitamins and short-chain fatty acids
• that are needed to rebuild and have a mucosal immune system
• to compose most of your gut microbiome and crowd out the wee-beasts - consuming the food they would eat in their absence
• that are required to create a pH in the intestinal environment that is inhospitable to parasites, viruses, bacteria
• that keep candida from mutating back into an invasive fungus when you discontinue your candida killing crusade
• that interact with your gut–brain axis and your genes.

Keep in mind that time released Undecenoic acid with HCL is only able to kill candida in the gut. It can’t reach the deep muscle hiding places where candida wait patiently for you to get off your candida killing products and then comes back at you with a vengeance. It can't cross the blood brain barrier and eliminate candida in your brain.

Acidopholis is at the top of the list, with the promise that this "friendly bacteria" will over-run the bad bacteria (Candida) and force it out, so that you are left "Candida free". There is a huge problem with that concept.
#1 Candida multiplies 6x faster than healthy, viable probiotic bacteria. It's a race the probiotic simply can't win. You can’t repopulate the gut fast enough to stay ahead of candida once you stop taking anti-fungals. I know, because I tried it over and over and over again for 25 years. I was spinning my wheels - wasting precious time, money, energy and getting nowhere.
#2 The probiotic can't take over a sick intestinal lining that is full of holes (Leaky Gut) and has a hostile environment that is comfortable for the Candida, which has grown like the roots of a plant into the intestinal wall and tapped directly into the blood stream.
#3 Many strains of probiotic have a variety of different functions in a healthy GI tract and acidopholis is only a one of them. All are needed to work synergistically together. Eating yogurt doesn't replenish those bacteria, because hydrochloric acid in the stomach kills most of them.
#4 What you consume may be killing the probiotic in your GI tract, while you are trying to repopulate. Preservatives, refined sugars, medications, even stress kills the good guys.

There is an increasing incidence of infections caused by Candida glabrata and Candida rugosa, which have become increasingly resistant to azole anti fungal drugs. For example, C. krusei is an emerging fungal pathogen originating in hospitals. It has a natural resistance to standard anti-fungal medications. It is often found in patients who have had prior fluconazole (Dyflucan) exposure, which indicates a mutation. Most Candida species require vitamins, but C. krusei can grow in a media devoid of vitamins. Mortality due to C. krusei fungemia is much higher than the more common C. albicans. There is an increasing incidence of infections caused by Candida glabrata and Candida rugosa, which have become increasingly resistant to azole anti fungal drugs.

Lufeneron I hate to burst your bubble, but here are the facts about using Lufeneron to treat Candida.

Lufeneron is a dangerous drug that creates resistant strains. Candida has been abandoned by the medical profession.
Many companies have taken advantage of this void by selling products that will make a profit for them, but do relatively nothing for the Candida sufferer. They promise a cure, but fail to deliver.
The promotion of Lufenuron is an example of promising a cure, while discouraging the use of anything else, in an attempt to steer people away from following sound advise.

Lufeneron, a benzoylurea pesticide, which interferes with the chitin needed for the Candida cell to form a hard outer shell or exoskeleton. It is also an ingredient in veterinary flea control, heart worm prevention and medications to destroy parasites. It is also sold as an agricultural pesticide and anti fungal for plants. However, it does not kill adults.

It is marketed to desperate people as an effective anti-fungal, due to it’s ability to act as a chitin synthesis inhibitor, but the Candida are not so cooperative as marketers may think.
Chitin is found in Candida cell walls in varying degrees, depending on the environmental stresses that candida encounters. Candida has the ability to manipulate the chitin content in its cell walls membranes. In the presence of chitin inhibitors, it will alter its chitin content to preserve the integrity of its cell wall membrane. Promoters of Lufenuron want you to believe that Candida doesn’t have that ability.

Initial science demonstrated a possible role in affecting Candida fungal growth, but subsequent studies dismissed it.
Science shows Lufenuron doesn’t work against Candida, however, the later reports were not made known to the public.

Adverse effects have been reported in dogs and cats after oral Lufenuron was administered: vomiting, lethargy, depression, diarrhea, anorexia, skin redness, pruritus/urticaria. Using an insecticide designed for animals, in humans, is not something I would recommend.

Another reason I am glad I did not use Lufenuron is its affect on intestinal membranes, causing you to have leaky gut. It disturbs the epithelial barrier and epithelial transport processes, which can be a major factor in the pathogenesis of intestinal inflammation and inflammatory bowel disease. In other words, your Leaky Gut can’t heal because every dose of Lufenuron is attacking the wall of your intestines and keeping your gut leaky.

Lufenuron also causes female reproduction problems. Lufenuron interferes with the formation of cell walls in many beneficial bacteria, interfering with the structure of healthy intestinal bacteria. Lufenuron builds up in tissues, especially fat.

Antibiotics Antibiotics have done much good in our society by solving the tuberculosis problem when there was no other way of treating it. This is true of many other infections as well and antibiotics have saved many lives. Antibiotics still have a place in our medical system, if they are used in a responsible and conservative manner. Many doctors and patients consider antibiotics to be benign. Antibiotics were never meant to be used for convenience, to “prevent” an infection, or for a minor infection like earache, sore throat, sinus infection or vaginal yeast infection, but only to “save a life”. Dentists are requiring their patients to take antibiotics to “prevent” infection after minor dental procedures. The body’s immune system was designed to take care of these minor infections. There is a very dark side to antibiotics that not many people know about or understand completely.

Antibiotics suppress the immune system by not allowing it to do the job it was designed to do. Repeated use of antibiotics kills off the intestinal flora and destroys the delicate intestinal ecosystem of checks and balances that keeps Candida albicans and other microbes in check. Most people have no understanding of the consequences of this. When permanent damage to the good vs bad bug ratio in the intestinal tract is caused by repeated antibiotic use, the digestive system and immune system are altered forever, functioning at a diminished capacity that continues to deteriorate over time. This explains why so many people in our society are suffering with chronic illness.

Candida albicans is an invasive pathogen that can live and multiply anywhere, in or on the body. Systemic Candida albicans infections have become an epidemic in many countries around the world who use antibiotics freely and predisposed to almost every chronic symptom and disease that plagues us in this century. Candida helps to increase the virulence of other pathogens. Clostridium difficile is another normal intestinal bacterium that can become a virulent pathogen also. It has been spreading through hospitals and killing patients. Doctors have become aware that this is happening, but they are not sure why or where it’s going. Huge problems occur when there are multiple pathogens invading the system.

Decades of antibiotic use have created drug resistant intestinal bacteria. We are just in the past 5-10 years coming to understand the role of the microbiome in gut function and human health and the consequences of altering that environment with antibiotics.

Antibiotics cause bacteria and other pathogens to alter the structure of their cell wall, creating a biofilm, in order to invade the systems of the body and in order to become more resistive. This is true of Pseudomonas that cause breathing difficulty in cases of lung infections and Staphylococcus aureus, which has similar biofilm building capabilities.

This altered intestinal environment sets the stage for the development of Leaky Gut syndrome.

The use of antibiotics undermines the long-term health of every patient who takes them, even when antibiotics are absolutely necessary to save life. This short term fix creates long-term serious health problems that are treated by physicians as separate and unrelated disease conditions, using drugs that manage symptoms, while the underlying cause of each of these diseases goes undiagnosed or ignored. Most often, these disease conditions are never linked to the origin of taking antibiotics. Children who are given antibiotics for earaches have a higher incidence of recurrent ear infections than those who did nothing and those same children also have a much higher occurrence of allergies and asthma. Antibiotics are able to mutate the bacterium that cause earaches, increasing the chances of getting Systemic Candida albicans from repeated doses, which lowers overall immunity, permanently, and is the underlying cause of almost every diagnosis.

Natural antibiotics are seen as alternatives, but they can also alter beneficial bacterial populations and irritate the intestinal mucosa, causing inflammation and deterioration.

It is up to the patient to understand the long-term consequences of antibiotic use. Prudence is advised. Many are completely unaware of the ongoing danger, because no one has informed them about the repercussions of taking antibiotics. Education is essential to develop an understanding of alternative methods that are more effective and far less damaging to the body. Herbs, homeopathic remedies and other options can help you ward off a cold by supporting the immune system in its very critical function.

Any approach in restoring balance to the intestinal flora, immune response and Candida overgrowth, should take into consideration the whole body. You must know our enemy to defeat them.

Candida doesn’t exist in an isolated area of the body, like the intestines. It takes up residence in the deep tissues, where nothing can reach it. There it lays in wait for you to get off your Candida killing drug or natural remedy (garlic, oregano oil, lavender, thieves oil, tea tree oil, peppermint, coconut oil, Pau d'Arco, goldenseal, coatis chinensis, ginger, grapefruit seed extract, cinnamon, olive leaf extract, Spanish black radish) and comes back out at you with a vengeance. For this reason, attempts to kill Candida present with short-lived results at best, but they frequently cause more harm to the body in the process.

Pharmaceutical companies are not in the business to provide cures, but to make life long customers. Pharmaceutical drugs and other products on the market to attack and kill Candida cause die-off. Any product (a pesticide) that weakens the Chitin or Biofilm layer of Candida, so that what little immune system you have left hasn't any chance of attacking the fungus, causes Candida to produce toxins.

Their decaying dead bodies and the toxins flood the body, causing a ‘Jarisch-Herxheimer’ reaction that makes people very sick and chronically fatigued to the point of being unable to function. The Candida toxins and dead bodies produce toxins too rapidly for the body to process and eliminate. This creates a “healing crisis” that has the potential to overwhelm the kidneys and cause damage, especially if the liver and kidneys have not been cleansed prior to starting treatment. Symptoms of a die off reaction include increased or more intense symptoms of Systemic Candidiasis - dizziness, headache, brain fog, eye floaters, depression, anxiety, anger, gas & bloating, flatulence, diarrhea, constipation, joint pain, muscle pain, body aches, sore throat, general malaise, exhaustion, sleepiness, sweating, chills, nausea, skin breakouts and chronic fatigue. If the exits of the body have not been opened, toxins get backed up, causing the worst possible waste build-up in the lymphatic system, which is it’s dumping station. Those with methylation issues will suffer the most. This is unsafe at best and a potentially very dangerous approach to clearing the body of yeast.

The only way to restore your health is to put candida back into its proper form, function and station, while at the same time rebuilding the intestinal wall. I have done that.

You can’t turn your back on Candida. It is always looking for an opportunity to overpopulate. If you return to your old habits and lifestyle, it can result in the development of new fungal colonies over time.
