Diets restricting carbohydrate foods


The Ketogenic Diet is a popular weight loss strategy. People who seek a professional to help them lose weight on the Ketogenic Diet receive information and guidance about how to proceed, as well as monitoring. However, many of my clients have unknowingly put themselves on a Ketogenic diet by limiting their food consumption to only meat and vegetables, or intentionally utilizing the Candida Diet. They have eliminated all grains and fruits from their diet with the mistaken notion that this will starve Candida.

The Ketogenic Diet deliberately puts the body into a condition known as Ketosis. Ketosis is a normal metabolic process that your body naturally does to keep working. When it doesn't receive adequate carbohydrates from food for your cells to burn for energy, your cells turn to fat stores.
▪ For animals and primitive man, winter food supply was limited to meat, nuts and a few root vegetables. The carbohydrate foods, like fruits and grasses (grains), were only available for a limited time during the summer. When they start eating carbohydrate foods again, the brain will trigger weight gain, because the primitive, survival brain knows that when carbohydrates are available, it is time to store fat for winter. The body has been programmed for this since the beginning and it has changed very little since then, so it goes into survival mode; a state of physiological stress.

As a part of the process of converting fat into fuel, it makes ketones. Ketosis is characterized by raised levels of ketone bodies in the body, as well as diabetes mellitus.
▪ Ketone bodies are any of three related compounds (acetone, acetoacetic acid, beta-hydroxybutyric acid) produced during the metabolism of fats.
▪ Diabetes mellitus is a disease in which the body's ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired, resulting in the abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates and elevated levels of glucose in the blood and urine. For people with uncontrolled diabetes, ketones are a sign of insufficient use of insulin.
▪ Ketosis becomes dangerous when ketones build up. High ketone levels lead to dehydration and a change in the chemical balance of your blood. Ketoacidosis is what happens when ketosis goes too far. Ketones build up in your blood and it becomes acidic. Ketoacidosis can cause coma or death. Symptoms of ketoacidosis include: thirst-less or dry mouth, urinating a lot, feeling tired, dry or flushed skin, feeling sick to your stomach, throwing up, confusion, pain in your belly and/or a fruity-smelling breath. Some people without diabetes can develop ketoacidosis due to alcoholism, overactive thyroid or STARVATION.

To stop ketosis, the person on a supervised Ketogenic Diet will reintroduce a limited number of grams of carbohydrates into their daily food consumption. As I explained earlier, the introduction of carbohydrates after a state of ketosis triggers the primitive brain to store fat for winter, so the person gains weight. Then they have to get back on the Ketogenic Diet to lose the weight again, and thus begins a roller-coaster ride they can't easily get off of. A healthy person who consistently eats a diet that includes all food groups, doesn't normally make or use ketones. But when carbohydrates are reduced or eliminated, your body will switch to ketones for energy.

The person on a self imposed Candida Diet fears that carbs will feed their enemy, Candida. They are not likely to realize that they have put their body into a state of ketosis or how to get their body out of that state. A home test kit can let you know if your body is in ketosis. Just like with the Ketogenic Diet, the Candida dieter will lose fat. When all their fat is gone, their body begins to lose muscle. Their weight drops quickly and becomes dangerously low very fast due to three things.

First, you can't starve Candida. When you stop eating carbohydrates, the Candida dig deep into your muscle tissue and convert the glycogen in your muscles back into glucose to feed itself. It will literally eat your muscle.

Second, if you have leaky gut - that causes maldigestion and malabsorption, which leads to malnutrition. You can't absorb what you eat and so food simply travels from one end of a pipe to the other end. Food comes out looking like you just swallowed it. This is starvation. I've been there and done that, for years!

Third, your body is in a state of ketosis. Carbohydrates are the easiest thing to digest, but you can't absorb what you eat. You are not getting enough into your bloodstream to stop ketosis and muscle wasting continues rapidly. In my final stage Systemic Candidiasis clients, time is of the essence to heal leaky gut, so that absorption can take place and stop ketosis.

With new clients, one of the first things I must do is to educate them about how to let go of their fear of feeding Candida. Candida are going to eat! You can't starve them. If you stop eating carbohydrates, they will use your muscle tissue for food. They are one of the bugs that will decompose your body after you die. You want to turn Candida's attention away from consuming your muscle for food and back to it's preferred fuel, carbohydrates. Yes! You want to feed the wee-beast, but just enough to keep it satisfied.

The key is to eat whole grains and low glycemic fruits in their most natural form, so that the fiber naturally regulates the slow rate of glucose metabolism. This ensures that you will get most of what you eat and the Candida will get the scraps. You don't want to give Candida processed carbohydrate foods, high glycemic index fruits, alcohol or fruit juices, because they are low or devoid of fiber and high in sugar. These foods and beverages will excite Candida and cause massive growth, which will then produce an overwhelming amount of toxins and increase chronic fatigue.

If my client previously had a fear of fat and carbohydrates because they thought, "carbs make me fat," and that "fat in food makes me fat", then we also have to address those false toxic beliefs. Carbohydrates are brain fuel. The brain is made up of 65% fat and the rest is protein. When clients stop eating fat, because to them, fat in food = fat on my body or they can't digest fat, the brain becomes Essential Fatty Acid deficient and it can't make neurotransmitters for sleep and positive mood, or build neurological pathways for memories. The brain knows that it is the most vital organ in the body. It will sacrifice every other system to ensure its function and your survival. It uses fat reserves and will convert your muscle for fuel, just like the Candida do. Since the self imposed Ketogenic Diet has manipulated your metabolism and melted away your fat reserves, the brain has lost it's savings account. When carbohydrate fuel is absent and fat is gone, mental deterioration begins. The brain needs carbs and fat!

A "no or low carbohydrate" diet is not the answer. Consuming the right amount of the right kind of carbohydrate foods is essential for optimal health, especially if you have Candida yeast overgrowth or you want to manage your weight and glucose levels.

The Ketogenic Diet is a combination of the Atkins and Paleo diets that stress the use of protein as fuel. It is a relatively new and experimental diet that is not a sustainable way to eat and maintain weight or health long term, especially for people with type A blood, because their metabolism is built to use carbohydrates for fuel, not protein. It is a fine short term diet for people with type O blood, because they get their energy from protein. They were the hunter-gatherers and the original blood type. Type A’s developed out of the agrarian, farming community types who developed ways of preserving food for winter, so they could eat more consistently throughout the year.
