Mercury is one of the most toxic substances found in our environment and it is toxic in any amount whatsoever in the tissues and cells of the body. Toxic metals make you sick when they bind with important molecules in your body, causing damage or problems within the central nervous system and other organs, such as the liver, spleen and kidneys. Mercury compromises immune system function by interfering with the livers detoxification pathways, thus weakening the bodies resistance against pathogens. This gives opportunistic fungi or any other pathogen a foothold. It accumulates in and damages all major organs of the body as well as the endocrine system, brain and nervous system. It is especially toxic to children, pets and pregnant women. The body will do everything it can to prevent toxins from entering the brain. It fills the lymph glands and fat stores of the body with harmful toxic substances first, but eventually the liver succumbs and toxins build up into the brain.
Mercury toxicity and yeast overgrowth are often connected, though which came first is different for every person. Low level mercury toxicity causes some degree of immune system suppression, making it easier for yeast to proliferate in the human body. Mercury decreases the ability of macrophages (a type of white blood cell) to kill yeast and other pathogens by disrupting cellular communication by binding to receptor sites on the cells and keeping messages from getting through. Macrophages pass by bacteria and yeast without engulfing and killing them. In fact, studies have shown that Candida albicans can convert the less toxic form of mercury (inorganic form) into the more toxic methyl mercury (organic form), which the body absorbed much more readily. However, healthy gut bacteria do the opposite. They convert the bad methyl mercury into the less toxin inorganic form, so that less mercury is absorbed by the body. Antibiotics increase the absorption of mercury because they kill the beneficial bacteria that help guard against the absorption of mercury.
Candida grows very well without any assistance from toxic metals, but Candida albicans and Candida tropical undergo multiple shifts in growth rate and biofilm community structure when cultivated in a concentration gradient of divalent mercury cations (Hg2+). Toxic metals may alter biofilm susceptibility to natural or synthetic antimicrobial agents and be important regulators affecting a cell type morphogenic switch that correlates with a transition from two organisms in which one benefits without harming the host to violence, producing an infectious fungal biofilm. Toxic metals may influence cellular differentiation, community structure and anti fungal resistance of mature biofilms. This reveals the effect of toxic metals on the differentiation of Candida and may be a biological indicator of metal pollution in the environment. Candida yeast inadvertently protects the body from exposure to toxic metals when mercury binds to Candida cell walls, so it is not entering the tissues of the body. However, when Candida is killed, mercury and other toxic metals in the Candida cell walls are released into the body as the dead Candida decays. Mercury can come into contact with the bodies own cells as it is eliminated and be reabsorbed into the blood and tissues of the body. This very likely contributes to die-off symptoms, known as the Herxheimer effect. Mercury inhibits digestive enzymes and healthy bacteria, which then allows yeast and other wee-beasts to proliferate. When the levels of toxic metals in the body are lowered, Candida yeast overgrowth may increase, as some metal ions inhibit the growth of pathogens.
In the book, 'It’s All In Your Head', by Dr. Hal A. Huggins, he explains that 90% of the patients he tested demonstrated immune reactivity to low levels of mercury from dental fillings. Amalgam is a generic term for silver-mercury, and actually contains 50% mercury. Dr. Huggins says that mercury attacks the body in a number of ways. It kills cells by interfering with their ability to exchange oxygen, nutrients, and waste products through the cell membrane. Inside the cell, mercury destroys the genetic code, DNA, leaving us without the ability to reproduce that cell ever again. Mercury embeds itself in a cell membrane, giving that cell the appearance of being “foreign”, which triggers the immune system to destroy it, resulting in autoimmune diseases.
Mercury can interfere with nerve impulse transmission, causing organs to get the wrong messages, which may cause neurological symptoms such as frequent memory problems and numbness and tingling of the extremities. When mercury attaches to hormones, it deactivates them, even though blood tests say that adequate hormone is present. Hormonal deficiencies include thyroid, pancreas, and sex hormones. Mercury is also implicated in chronic fatigue syndrome. When mercury binds to the part of hemoglobin in the blood that carries oxygen, the hemoglobin level may look normal, but it’s ability to transport oxygen is hampered by the mercury sitting on the transportation area. The diffuse nature of this toxin makes it very difficult to blame for the health problems it causes.
Mercury leaches out of fillings through electrical current and mercury vapor. When Dr. Huggins touched an ammeter probe, which measures electrical current, to a filling while touching the ground probe to the soft tissue under the tongue, and he saw readings that had a mathematical relationship. Since electrical current follows a path with the least resistance, the fillings discharged current into the body and up to the brain. It didn’t discharge into the filling next to it. The patients he tested, who were tolerating the challenge of multiple fillings, had succumbed to the autoimmune disease to which they were genetically susceptible. It was observed by one of Dr. Huggins colleagues, who interviewed his patients after their amalgams were removed, “people process thought differently when they no longer have mercury in their mouths”.
Dr. Huggins noticed that his colleague had several fillings himself and used a Bacharach mercury detector tube, placed over a filling, to measure the mercury vapor coming from the fillings. He detected 90 micrograms of toxic mercury vapor every time his colleague exhaled. “He was contaminating his own body and my office with mercury vapor every time he exhaled”, Dr. Huggins said.
The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) states that the maximum safe level of exposure for 8 hours in a 24 hour day, is 50 mcg. At 51 mcg. they fine the offender $10,000 and close the facility. Dr. Huggins stated that in other tests, a 5 year old filling was examined to see if it still leached out substantial amounts of mercury. With the proper equipment, it was found that the filling still contained 27% of the mercury, compared to the average 50% mercury in a new filling, so nearly half of the mercury had leached out in five years. Tests were ordered on amalgams of known age and found that mercury loss may be a function of the amount of electrical current generated by the filling.
Dr. Huggins linked amalgam to neurological diseases like multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's, immunological diseases like arthritis and lupus, and cardiovascular and digestive diseases. At autopsy, people’s brain levels of mercury corresponded with the number of amalgam fillings in their mouths. Mercury attacks many systems in the body, Dr. Huggins said, so the diagnosis of mercury toxicity must be based on the number of changes that occur in the body and the degree of these changes. Patients usually think in terms of symptoms, but doctors are apt to look for measurable parameters, Dr. Huggins said. Because mercury accumulates in the tissues, it does not show up in urine and blood tests. Hair analysis and DNA analysis help doctors to detect toxic levels of mercury.
Mercury is one of the most toxic metals, even more so than lead. It is used in many products other than dental fillings, like fabric softeners, cosmetics, laxatives containing calomel, some hemorrhoid suppository preparations and other medications, polishes, wood preservatives, latex, solvents, plastics, ink used by printers and tattooers, and some paints. Mercury in dental fillings leaches out while chewing and is absorbed into the blood stream. There is no barrier to prevent mercury from reaching the brain cells, where it can do serious damage.
Mercury is a cumulative poison that is retained in the pain center of the brain and the central nervous system. My symptoms of mercury poisoning included insomnia, dizziness, fatigue, weakness, depression, memory loss, irritability, a metallic taste in my mouth, loose teeth, dermatitis, and hair loss. High levels of mercury have been linked to Systemic Candidiasis, which I also have.
I would definitely say that Dr. Huggins book addressed another piece of my health puzzle. When I learned what the 5 large amalgam fillings I had in my mouth were doing to my health, I had them replaced with non-composite fillings as soon as I could. Safe mercury removal includes the use of chelation, cilantro paste, chlorella, glutathione, zeolite, alpha lipoic acid, n-acetyl cysteine, Epsom Salt or clay baths. An acidic body holds onto toxic metals, so balancing the bodies pH level is also an important component for mercury removal. Multi-mineral supplementation is essential to help drive out toxic metals. A 4 ounce serving of any of these fish contains insignificant amounts of mercury for a 140 pound woman. It makes me wonder what is truly behind the seafood scare.
We are overfishing our oceans, lakes, rivers and streams. I get that. Elemental mercury exposure is from dental amalgam fillings, which leaches very slowly into the body as the filling deteriorates over time. Auto exhausts release significant amounts of mercury into the air, so living in an area of high auto emissions will expose you to breathing in more mercury than if you stay in rural areas.

Methyl mercury exposure is from seafood. It is important to know where on the planet your seafood was harvested from. Some seas and lakes are more contaminated than others, but water isn’t stationary. It circulates all over the planet, which we all know is more toxic than ever before.
Consuming fish and other seafoods that contain lectins which are not biochemically compatible with your body can also cause serious health issues. For example, if your blood type is A, scavenger fish like crab, lobster, shrimp, flounder, shark and muscles are “poisonous to you”.
How you cook fish matters just as much. Consuming grilled, microwaved, or deep fried foods introduces benzene to your body, which must be detoxified by the liver. Benzopyrene’s develop due to lack of shielding between the food and the heat source, no matter what that source of heat is; flame or electric. Benzopyrene’s are very toxic and can lower your immunity while facilitating the growth spurt of parasites and other pathogens. Benzene is a carcinogen, which increases the risk of fatal cancer of blood-forming organs and other illnesses, like bone marrow failure, aplastic anemia, acute leukemias, myelodysplastic syndrome. Other mercury compounds are used as preservatives in medicines and vaccines.
Mercury is used in skin lighteners, anti-aging products to remove blemishes, age spots, wrinkles or freckles on the skin, acne treatments, lotions, antiseptic soaps, and TATOOS. I am seeing an increasing number of people who are decorating their body with inks that contain the solvents and toxic heavy metals contained in automotive body paint. The skin is the largest organ of the body and absorbs everything that comes in contact with it, as if injected.
So I understand the concern people have about consuming mercury in fish, but personally, I am not so focused on food as I am on the cumulative effects of mercury exposure from all sources.
Mercury can damage kidneys and the nervous system, interfere with brain development in unborn children and very young children.
So, while everyone’s concern is heightened over mercury exposure from eating seafood, they are not aware of other things that could potentially be causing them more harm.
