Is fluoride good or bad for your health?

What is fluorine and fluoride?

Many people associate Fluoride with the periodic element table namesake - fluorine. Fluorine is not the same as fluoride that causes you to envision tooth protection, strong bones, and a government that cares about your dental health.

Fluorine is the chemical element of atomic number 9 (F), a poisonous pale yellow gas of the halogen series. It was discovered as an element in other compounds in the early 1500's by the German physician Georgius Agricola, and isolated in its pure form by Henri Moissan in the late 1800's. Fluorine is the most electronegative (the tendency to attract a bonding pair of electrons) and is reactive with practically all organic and inorganic substances. It is the most corrosive and oxidative of all the elements, causing severe burns on contact with skin. Even water will burn in fluorine with a bright flame.
  • An ion is an atom or molecule with more or less electrons than usual, giving it a positive or negative electric charge. Because an ion "wants" to become neutral by acquiring or losing additional electrons, and that's why fluorine is never found in its purest form in nature. Ions usually come in the form of solutions or compounds. There are three types of ions — anions, which are negatively charged, cations, which are positively charged, and radicals, or radical ions, which are highly reactive due to having a large amount of free electrons. This is the category fluorine falls under. Fluorine is a corrosive, oxidative, free radial, poisonous substance.

Fluoride is a compound of fluorine with another element or group, especially a salt of the anion F¯ or an organic compound with fluorine bonded to an alkyl group. Remember, fluorine can bond with almost any element due to its electronegative and oxidizing properties. Compounds containing the negative ion of fluorine are referred to as fluorides.
  • Stannous fluoride (SnF2 - tin II fluoride) is tin with two hydrogen atoms combined with fluorine, an ingredient in toothpastes as a "tooth decay preventative" and decrease dental hypersensitivity and are typically more expensive than those that use sodium fluoride.
  • Sodium fluoride is a compound of the elements sodium and fluorine with the chemical formula NaF. NaF is a dry compound, soluble salt, which is added to water systems. Sodium fluoride is also an ingredient in toothpaste.
  • Fluorosilicic acid - added to water systems that supply small populations. https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/ipcsneng/neng1233.html "AVOID ALL CONTACT! Effects of long-term repeated exposure: The substance may have effects on the bones and teeth, resulting in fluorosis."
  • Sodium fluorosilicate is made by neutralizing fluorosilicic acid with sodium chloride or sodium sulfate. It is used as an additive for water fluoridation, ore refining, or other fluoride chemical production. http://nj.gov/health/eoh/rtkweb/documents/fs/1701.pdf "Sodium fluorosilicate has not been tested for its ability to cause cancer in animals; has not been tested for its ability to affect reproduction. Repeated high exposure can cause deposits of fluorides in the bones and teeth, a condition called 'Fluorosis'. This can cause pain, disability and mottling of the teeth".

When ingested, the fluoride part of the molecule splits off to form a fluoride ion. This ion is easily absorbed by the body.

Both elemental fluorine and the fluoride ion are highly toxic. Neither fluorine, nor fluoride is considered a necessary dietary element because humans do not require it for growth or to sustain life.

In this article, I want to make you aware of the dangers associated with fluoridation and why fluoride is one of the most pernicious toxins in our water supply.

Toxic Poison water

The TRUTH

What you may not know is that the fluoride added to drinking water, mouthwash and toothpaste is a waste product of the aluminum and phosphate fertilizer industries, cement, steel and nuclear weapons manufacturing, and a substance toxic enough to be used in rat poison.

  • The history of artificial water fluoridation began with the uncontrolled release of industrial fluoride waste into rivers and streams where many communities got their drinking water from. In the late 19th century patents were filed using fluorides to purify and soften water. They claimed that fluoride displaced the minerals that were responsible for water hardness. None of the applicants considered that any of their proposed additions would be toxic or poisonous, even though its toxicity was recognized at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the 1850’s, when iron and copper factories released it into the air and poisoned plants, animals and people. The 1940’s brought about increased production during the war, which increased industrial wastes. The dumping of wastes into rivers and streams was considered an unjustifiable, but time-honored practice that had to stop, but they had to face the fact that it couldn’t be discontinued at that time.
  • More inventive minds realized that instead of dumping fluoride waste into rivers directly, they could earn additional income by more subtle means of disposal. They coordinated between industry, public health services, a number of government departments and researchers who had incentive to conceal evils. Government funds, provided by the Social Security Act of 1935, were used to introduce artificial fluoridation by adding fluorine to the water supply in Cincinnati, Ohio (population 30,000) in 1942. The Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA), one of the largest producers of sodium fluoride, was interested in selling it. ALCOA ran several advertisements in the Journal of the American Water Works Association saying sodium fluoride was particularly suitable for the fluoridation of city water supplies and offered to sell it to them. Toxicity information was only for those who handled the chemical at the water works. “Water soluble fluorides are toxic. Do not swallow or inhale. Avoid prolonged contact.” With the growth of fluoridation programs, sodium fluoride was in short supply already in 1951 and prices increased. The Office of Price Stabilization granted higher price ceilings to manufacturers of sodium silicofluoride.
  • It was James McClure, a biochemist at the National Institutes of Health, who made the actual proposal to substitute sodium fluosilinate for sodium fluoride as a water fluoridating agent in 1950.
  • In June 1951, the State Dental Directors recommended never to refer to “sodium fluoride” as the agent is used for water fluoridation, but most people know it as a trademark for rat poison and insecticide.
  • The argument was raised that sodium fluoride is a waste product of their aluminum production, but the Journal of the American Dental Association was quick to publish a denial presented by ALCOA’s Chemical Sales Mgr. in 1955, saying “ We do not sell sodium fluoride directly, but through chemical distributors. A high percentage of sodium fluoride is obtained from phosphate rock and we have no operations involving phosphate rock. Our policy may change from time to time. We are now selling direct and we may sell to municipalities … We manufacture sodium fluoride for sale. Anyone who wants to use it can buy from us, provided our production facilities enable us to supply it and our prices enable us to secure the business”. He contradicted himself.
  • Chemical companies developed new uses for sodium fluosilate, the waste product of the phosphate fertilizer industry. For phosphate fertilizer plants to dispose of silicon tetrafluoride and hydrofluosilicic acid as wastes, they have to convert these chemicals to hydrofluoric acid or some other fluorine compound. But first, the recovery of hydrofluosilicic acid involves essentially the recirculation of scrubbing water until the acid concentration reaches a marketable value.

The industry paid researchers to manufacture fraudulent science to "prove" the safety of fluoride, and carefully planned marketing campaigns in the early 1940’s to persuade Americans to embrace an environmental hazard in an effort to evade massive litigation against industry pollution.

Toothpaste 1950's

Two hundred million people in the United States are on fluoridated water and those who aren’t are encouraged to supplement with fluoride. The push for fluoridation has nothing to do with the dental health of Americans and everything to do with disposing of a hazardous waste very inexpensively, and make money selling it at the same time.

One of the most visible evidence of fluoride toxicity is dental fluorosis. In 1931, fluoride was found to be the cause of “mottled teeth” in humans. The chief chemist of ALCOA’s New Kensington plant near Pittsburg, Harry V. Churchill, proved the presence of fluoride in the water of districts afflicted with dental fluorosis near the Allegheny River. Fluorine had been discharged into the Allegheny River and he measured a concentration not greater than 1 part per million. It was assumed, “Probably not harmful and on the other hand may be positively beneficial …" and excused because small amounts of fluorine in the water could have come from certain rock formations”.

Today, it is an extremely common disorder characterized by hypo-mineralization of tooth enamel caused by ingestion of fluoride during enamel formation. In the extra-cellular environment of amelogenesis, the development and maturing of enamel, protein, ameloblastins, enamelins, and tuftelins direct the mineralization of enamel to form a highly organized matrix of rods, interrod crystal, and protein. Fluoride alters how amelogenin is enzymatically broken down and the rate at which the subsequent breakdown products are removed, and indirectly alter the action of protease via a decrease in the availability of free calcium ions in the mineralization environment. This results in the formation of enamel with less mineralization. It is marked by white specks and mottling of the teeth.

Dental fluorosis, while considered a mere cosmetic issue, is a warning sign that more harmful, invisible metabolic effects are taking place. In the United States, 58% of adolescents have signs of fluoride toxicity, 20% of those have moderate dental fluorosis, and 2% have severe dental fluorosis due to water fluoridation. That's a huge number. In moderate to severe fluorosis, teeth are physically damaged. The pits, bands, and loss of areas of enamel seen in severe fluorosis are the result of damage to the severely hypo-mineralized, brittle and fragile enamel which occurs after they erupt into the mouth. If severe, calcification of the ligaments also occurs. In truth, fluoridation does not prevent cavities or stop them from progressing, improve or lower the incidence of dental cavities. If anything, it increases the risk of tooth decay. We can stop this by discontinuing the fluoridation of water.

Fluoride displaces iodine from the thyroid, because iodine and fluorine are both halogens. Other halogen elements in the periodic table include chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), and astatine (At). Without iodine, you cannot make active thyroid hormones and this causes thyroid problems. If you are not currently hypothyroid, drinking fluoridated water may increase the risk of developing thyroid problems and if you are hypothyroid, consider that your water source may be the cause.

Fluoride is a poison that sabotages your mitochondria's ability to create cellular energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and an enzymatic reactor, meaning it reacts with enzymes in your body.

Fluoride is contributing to cancer, heart disease, diabetes (insulin resistance) and obesity.

Many independent scientists consistently find and now recognize, fluoride is a neurotoxin. When fluoride is added to the water system it also leaches lead out of old pipes, increasing the neurotoxic effects of fluoride. This is no surprise, considering 50 studies have linked fluoride with reduced IQ in children. The latest research shows there's a 5 point drop in IQ in the United States because fluoride in the water and from other sources is harming our brains.

Fluoride is a neurotoxin

The question, therefore, is not if fluoride damages the brain, because we know that it does, but at what dose do we actually see noticeable damage? The latest research by Dr. William Hirzy, a former risk assessment scientist at the EPA, shows a “safe” dose to prevent a 5 IQ point loss is 0.045 mg per day, but no-one should get more than 0.001 mg per day. Daily intakes in excess of about 0.05 mg of fluoride may result in depressed intellectual capability. Many children in the US commonly consume fluoride from a number of sources (i.e., water, food, dental products, medicines and air pollution). Current average mean daily intakes among children in the United States are estimated by EPA to range from about 0.80 mg/day to 1.65 mg/day. There is a considerable margin between the doses known in these studies to cause significant harm (.045) and the doses (.80 - 1.65 mg) that millions of Americans now receive. However, the EPA's own Guidelines for Neurotoxicity Risk Assessment highlights the importance of having a robust margin between the doses of a chemical that cause neurotoxic effects and the doses that humans receive. So, it makes sense that Mr. Hirzy would say, “No-one should get more than 0.001 mg per kg per day.” That is from all sources, not just drinking water. Infants drinking fluoridated water can get a dose 100 times higher than maximum recommended limits. Typically, this would be a cause for major concern, but unfortunately, the EPA has consistently avoided applying the normal rules of risk assessment to fluoride. Why, because they have to keep managing the disposal of this toxic industrial waste.

Fluoride may be similar to lead and mercury in having no threshold below which exposures may be considered safe. We would not think to add arsenic or lead to the water supply, but we do add fluoride which is more toxic than lead and just slightly less toxic than arsenic. There is an impact of in utero exposure to fluoride (via drinking water) on cognitive development delay in children. Mild mental retardation is associated with environmental fluoride exposure. There is no ’safe’ amount!

Some people are being harmed and they don't want the fluoride. I have clients who have real problems with fluoride, and chlorine. They can't even take a shower, bath or swim in a pool due to the fluoride and chlorine added to city water because they are so chemically sensitive. Their children are ADHD/ADD, autistic and experience other health problems because fluoride is causing serious problems to the developing brain. There is a correlation between fluoridation and increased ADHD rates in the U.S. We know that it's lowering IQ.

Fluoride's ability to lower IQ in children is just the tip of an iceberg of over 300 animal and human studies that indicate that fluoride is neurotoxic. Fluoride is causing neurodegenerative disease, including Alzheimer's, even though there are no studies currently connecting it to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
http://www.parkinsonsandfluoride.com. Few understand the molecular biology involved and therefore haven't made that connection yet. In the future, that will probably come to pass, but we simply do not have the time to wait for science to catch up.

Fluoride Is an Unapproved Drug

Fluoride supplements in the form of drops, tablets and lozenges have been on the market since the 1950s, but they've never received FDA approval, as the scientific evidence for safety and effectiveness does not exist. The American Dental Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Dental Pediatrics, the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) all confessed, after checking their records, “No studies could be found in their files.” Also, the FDA said they had no such studies and that the products in question, which had been prescribed to millions of infants and children since the 1950s, were not FDA approved. When the FDA was petitioned to remove these unapproved fluoride products in 1993, no action was ever taken.

Americans are being medicated

Fluoride is given to us in water without individual consent. No doctor is permitted to do that. A dentist can prescribe fluoride for the patients he/she has on record, but they can't do it for everyone. Yet the water districts, who are not legally able to prescribe, do that.

Water fluoridation medicates people without regard for age, weight or medical status. Infants drinking fluoridated water can get a dose100 times higher than maximum recommended limits, even by conservative U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommendations. Infants receiving formula made with fluoridated water are getting hundreds of times more fluoride than breastfed babies. Bear in mind that the EPA does not aim to protect 100 percent of the population, only 90 percent and infants are excluded altogether because they end up getting such a toxic dose. In my opinion, the EPA has not only failed to protect public health, but is actively sabotaging their health everywhere water is fluoridated.

Water Fluoridation Is Unregulated

There's no federal agency in charge of regulating water fluoridation. The EPA is prohibited by Congress from adding anything to water for the treatment of humans, so they don't add fluoride to water. They just permit it to be done, and they keep the maximum allowable contaminant levels high enough so that it's possible to do it. In 2006, the National Research Council said the maximum contaminant level was too high, but instead of lowering it, the EPA raised it because they realized that there are too many sources of fluoride as a waste byproduct of industry, not the natural mineral everyone thinks they are getting. Companies have to get rid of this toxic substance somehow — by putting it into the drinking water supply and using people as filters to reduce environmental pollution. Not really the right way to go, but that's what's happening. It's a crime against humanity to use us a bio-filters for toxic waste.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) really should regulate fluoride, seeing how it is a drug, yet the agency has continuously deferred regulatory action. The ultimate decision to add fluoride to water is made at the local level by your city's water district. The local people are supposed to do all the scientific research, yet most people don't typically have a science background, and yet are expected to evaluate the science on something that's given to everyone without freedom of choice. They're making this decision for you, and doing the FDA's job of deciding whether fluoride, a drug, is safe and effective or not. However, to a large extent, they are relying on the CDC, and the CDC is relying on the American Dental Association. It’s the American Dental Association’s job to protect dentists, and dentists make a significant amount of money on fluoride.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has declared water fluoridation one of the top 10 greatest public health achievements of the 20th century. Most dentists are proponents of water fluoridation because it is purported to decrease your risk of dental cavities. How do dentists make money on fluoridation if it prevents decay? Because it doesn't prevent decay and it causes damage to teeth. Plus, the amount of money charged in the dental office for fluoride treatments is significant. I have something to say about alternative dentistry at the bottom of this article.

You maybe looking for a way to remove fluoride from your drinking water.

Fluoride is a very small molecule, making it tremendously difficult to filter out once added to your water supply. Fluoride can be removed from drinking water, but most commercial water filters do not filter out the fluoride.

The three methods recommended for removing fluoride from drinking water by the EPA and WQA-Certified Water Treatment Products which use activated alumina filter media, bone char carbon filter, and reverse osmosis systems. Regular carbon filters will not remove fluoride as some claim they do, like Brita. If you have a house water carbon filtration system that has a large volume of carbon, then it may reduce the fluoride as fluoride removal is in direct proportion to the amount of fluoride and the time it's in contact with the media. It's just not going to get it all. A double multi-media cartridge filter system is needed to allow proper contact time for effective fluoride removal. The substance in the activated alumina filter cartridges is aluminum oxide, which is the same chemical substance as sapphire and rubies, but without the impurities (this is not aluminum).

The more effective filtering systems for fluoride removal are hazardous for other reasons:
Reverse osmosis (RO). The drawback is that it removes valuable minerals and trace elements as well and makes the water acidic, which is very detrimental. RO systems also need frequent cleaning to avoid bacterial growth because bacteria feed on the nutrients the filters remove. Those nutrients should be going into you! So, I do not recommend reverse osmosis.

Water distillation which, like RO, gets everything out, including beneficial minerals and makes the water acidic. I do not recommend distilled water. I drank distilled water for several years, thinking it was the best thing, but when my combined urine and saliva pH measured 4.5, and it felt like battery acid was flowing through my muscles, I realized my error.

You can add back minerals to restructure the water but it is expensive and ineffective because most mineral supplements are not absorbable and not all the minerals and trace elements are restored, or in the proper proportions with their synergy and cofactors in tact. We can’t reproduce what nature has already provided.

When water travels through pipes, the spin changes the molecular structure of water and makes it less absorbable by cells. If you are drinking, still thirsty and bloated, it is an indication that your water is not hydrating cells and pooling in the spaces between cells. I can help you correct this problem, so you can get the optimum hydration your body needs. It's easy and inexpensive.

I would be happy to assist you in your search for the healthiest drinking water solution for your family.

Clearly, the simplest, most effective, most economical strategy is not to put fluoride in the water to begin with.

I used to live in a row home with city water and I became more seriously ill with every passing year. The tap water I drank and bathed in for eleven years was chlorinated and fluorinated, but also the air was toxic with exhaust and industrial pollution. When I couldn't tolerate it anymore, we moved to the top of a mountain surrounded by state forest and county watershed lands. We have well water and the air is clean to breathe. We've lived here almost 20 years and my health has never been better. Not everyone can move to a more healthy environment, but if you can, I highly recommend it.

You maybe looking for a new dentist

On the subject of dentists and hygienists, my family has gone to a biological dentist for the past 25 years, aka holistic dentistry, biologic dentistry, alternative dentistry, unconventional dentistry or biocompatible dentistry. It is the equivalent of complementary and alternative medicine - for dentistry.

Biodentistry

Holistic dentistry recognizes the strong connection between oral health and general health. It emphasizes approaches to dental care that consider dental health in the context of the patient's entire physical and emotional health. Although the holistic dental community is diverse in its practices and approaches, they have a common strong opposition to the use of mercury amalgam in dental fillings, use nonsurgical approaches to gum disease, and believe that root canals may endanger the systemic health of the patient through the spread of bacteria trapped in the cavitations to the rest of the body. Many dentists who use these terms also regard water fluoridation unfavorably.

My children are grown and have no cavities or dental problems. They are truly healthy and don't get colds or infections. I think it is because they are not exposed to certain things, like fluoride, chlorine, pollution, toxins, medicines, etc. I want that for your children too.

True cavity prevention requires addressing your diet, because cavities develop in response to an abnormality in your oral micro-biome. Moreover, since your mouth is part of your gut, it is also a gut micro-biome issue. I can help you with that also.

2017 Fluoride Conference

In 2016, The Fluoride Action Network (FAN), and the International Academy of Oral Medicine & Toxicology petitioned the FDA to remove all sources of fluoride from the market. FAN is trying to at least reduce, if not eliminate, the amount of fluoride that people are ingesting nationwide. On February 27, 2017, the EPA published their response. It was denied because FAN had not done a comprehensive analysis of all the uses of fluoride. In their decision, the EPA claimed: “The petition has not set forth a scientifically defensible basis to conclude that any persons have suffered neurotoxic harm as a result of exposure to fluoride in the U.S. through the purposeful addition of fluoridation chemicals to drinking water or otherwise from fluoride exposure in the U.S." Fluoride is used in so many areas, like pesticides, post-harvest fumigants, medications, dental products, water, toothpastes, so to do a comprehensive analysis of all sources is virtually impossible and the EPA has never done it.

Fortunately, the TSCA statute provides citizens with the ability to challenge an EPA denial in federal court. The Fluoride Action Network (FAN), along with a coalition of environmental and public health groups has filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in response to their denial of FAN’s petition under Section 21 of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) seeking a ban on water fluoridation. For too long, EPA has let politics rules over science on the fluoride issue. FAN welcomes having these issues considered by a federal court, where scientific evidence has a better chance of being weighed objectively.

Many believe this lawsuit is an unprecedented opportunity to end the practice once and for all in the U.S., and potentially throughout the world, based on the well-documented neurotoxicity of fluoride. This case will present the first time a court will consider the neurotoxicity of fluoride and the question of whether fluoridation presents an unreasonable risk under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). And, in contrast to most other legal challenges of Agency actions, TSCA gives FAN the right to get the federal court to consider the more than 2,500 pages of scientific documentation detailing the risks of water fluoridation to human health as evidence ‘de novo’ — meaning federal courts are to conduct their own independent review of the evidence. FAN and the EPA will stand on equal footing, and the court will not have to give deference to a government agency, which is typically the case. I believe an impartial judge reviewing this evidence will agree that fluoridation poses an unreasonable risk. I am hopeful the court will see reason.

FAN’s relentless effort to get the U.S. government to take fluoride's neurotoxicity seriously is drawing attention to this issue. For many years, American regulatory and research agencies have failed to finance research to reproduce the more than 300 studies undertaken by other countries that have found fluorides neurotoxic harm to the brain, but now the U.S. government is funding several important toxicology studies, including a new National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded fluoride/brain study.

As shown by its support for these new neurotoxicity studies, our own government has acknowledged the risk fluoride poses to our children. If proponents cannot cite primary scientific studies (not bogus reviews conducted by pro-fluoridation agencies) that gives them the confidence to ignore or dismiss the evidence that fluoride damages the brain, as documented in over 300 animal and human studies, including 50 IQ studies, then fluoridation should be halted immediately, and should under no circumstances ever be initiated again.

More than 460 communities throughout the world have ended existing fluoridation programs or rejected new efforts to fluoridate either by council vote or citizen referendum since 1990. For the first time in more than 40 years, the U.S. population served by community water systems receiving fluoridated water (natural and artificial) has decreased, from 74.6 percent to 66.3 percent. Since January 2016 alone, FAN has confirmed that at least 33 communities with nearly a million collective residents voted to end fluoridation, bringing the number of victories since 2010 to at least 225 communities,15 representing approximately 6.5 million people. Since 2010, 220 communities have rejected water fluoridation. Most of these victories were the result of citizens organizing local campaigns and voicing their opposition to public officials. Many have been working in coordination with FAN or educating their neighbors and local decision makers about the serious health risks associated with the practice. Some of the latest victories in the U.S. include: 30,000 in Maine, 157,428 in New Mexico, 10,120 in Oregon, 25,000 in Virginia, and 26,000 in Pennsylvania.

If you want to learn more about how you can get involved to prevent or end water fluoridation in your community, join FAN's fluoride conference in Washington D.C. September 16-17, 2017. It is open to anyone who's interested. Bookmark FAN's website,
